For a long while, it was common practice to make your child switch from left to right. That's why there's a much larger left handed population today than in earlier generations. When I was little, my mother let us use whatever hand was natural, what ever hand we picked up the crayon with was the one we used and we could switch if we wanted. I ended up left handed and my brother is a righty. My mother is a preschool teacher, so that's what she does in class and encourages her parents to allow their children to do what's natural too.

I was picked on at school for being left handed.

Picked at school for being left-handed? That's awful >.<
Yeah, I'd either send my future children to private school or have them homeschooled. No one needs to face the horrors of public schools these days x.x

I could never, ever send my children to "Private" (we call it Public here, strange, huh?) school because it stands against everything I believe in. They can stay at home if they want, but I'd see how they got on at school. They're not all bad around here, just the ones in the scruffy areas. e.g. here.

*nods at Jo* Private schools have their advantages (uniforms are cute and we don't have them in most public schools), but I'm a staunch supporter of the public school system. Unfortunately, America desperately needs to invest more in it's educational system. Dx

Heh, all schools have uniforms in Australia, UK and Singapore xD Although Private Schools tend to have cuter uniforms.
I don't consider public school to be anything to be ashamed of; they do their best and lots of great people come out of public schools. I'm also not ignorant enough to think that Private schools are without bullies or problems, many are as bad as if not worse then some public schools, but if I can afford it when I'm older I WOULD probably opt for (good) Private Schooling if Home Schooling isn't an option because of work time limits, limitied resources (all that jazz).

Yeah =/ All of our schools have uniforms, which you must wear until you either leave Secondary School or go to college. And I think we need to put more money into a better Educational system, too. Including some basic cooking and washing skills =/ Even other appliances. You know, life skills. Not bollocks about why the world sucks. It's gonna suck if the people in it suck.
Back to the left handed thing, my cousin and her boyfriend are trying to stop their kid from being left handed because they think she will be bullied. I know she might through past experience, but I don't like the thought of them forcing her to use her right hand. Dx

I think homeschooling when a kid is young could be cool if done properly. But I'm not sure I would have the resources to do it how I would like. Also not sure I would have any kids. xD

*nods* I would probably want to keep mine in home school for at least half of primary school if not until high school (while having them in out of school things like drama or music or dancing so they stayed social). I think primary school was the most traumatic thing of my life and I didn't really learn enough for it to have been worth the damage it caused. All my language skills, spelling and reading were things I learnt on my own/picked up before school and strengthened in my own time. I couldn't spell properly until I hit nineth grade, which was my first year of home schooling. I'm still pretty handicapped when it comes to maths.
Even high school was pretty boring until the final two years where you have a choice of subjects such as History, Literature; the kinds of Art you want to learn. Of course that's just me, there's no saying that my own child wouldn't be different >.>;

I can see where your cousins are coming from, Jo, but if they're going to go to the effort they should teach their bebe to be ambidextrous.

I think forcing a child to use right over left is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard (in relation to parenting). If kids are going to be cruel, they will find anything to pick on someone for, parents have no control over that and it doesn't matter what hand they write with. I also don't understand how a kid bullies someone for being left handed. o_0

The only problem I had with left handers was that when I sat next to them we would bump elbows while writing/drawing xD (that's the only reason that I noticed my friends were left handed xDD)

*chuckle* Yeah, I really don't think there's a problem with people being lefties or righties. But Jo's right, some kids will find any reason to pick on others, unfortunately x.x

I'm ambidextrous, as is my mother. I mostly write with my right hand, but I'm perfectly capable of using my left hand, as I broke my right arm in primary, and so had to use my left hand for a good 4 months or so. xD
As a student at a private, Catholic school for 4 years now, I can definitely tell you children there are just as bad, if not worse, than those at public school. The thing about stereotypical private school children is, most of their parents have the money to spoil them, so they never really learned to accept when things weren't how they wanted them. So they tend to be big brats who have lived sheltered lives from the real world. In fact, some of them are so pressed to be perfect, lovely little Catholics, they pursue substance abuse even more than some public school kids. Despite everything I've said though, private school does have its benefits. My main point was that your children are not protected.

Ambidextrous? That's awesome ^^
Doesn't sound much better than public school, if you put it that way. I've been in public school for most of my education, and I guess it all boils down to the kind of people you mix with.
