Well, frist the Dutch (lead by Dirk hartog) ran into us by accident. They landed here in Western Australia, where we have lots of desert, and they decided it wasn't worth settling, named us something weird and scittered off. Some time later, the proud Brit Captain Cook ran into us (they thought this big patch of ocean HAD to have something in it) after accidentally bumping into NZ. He landed in the Eastern states, which is much lusher (it snows there, too) and they decided to settle and stuff.
Well, now after losing the Americas, England found they were running out of places to send their criminals, of which there were many 'cause they were big on the prosecution of people like common thieves. So they devised this plan wherein, people would (sometimes) get the choice: Go to jail or go to this new great southern land and collonize. Six months of hell chained in the hull of a prison ship, they were dumped here, given seed to sow and wished luck.
The near-annihalation of the Aboriginals (they wiped out Tasmania's group, don't know about all the others), discovery of our vast gold stores and mass immigration resulting, and bing bam boom, you've got yourself a settled Australia 8)
Fun Fact: Western Australia was the last state to stop importing convicts. Our once-main jail in Fremantle was also host to the last man to be hanged in Australia.

You are a spewing fountain of history knowledge!
Actually, I do recall learning somewhere that Australia was used for criminals. I think that my school is now used for that purpose. XD

Meh, I have a loose memory of it all. I tell you what, though, Dirk Hartog would be spinning in his grave. WA may look worthless in some parts but we have coal, gold, nickel, iron ore, diamonds, uranium and a bunch of other mineral sands that are handy for something. I think we also have opals and maybe lead as well. We literally carry the Australian economy and Holland would be pretty rich if they'd kept a claim on us xD Which I'm glad they didn't. Bleh. Dutch. ( ) Hahahaha xD I think they were just convenient labour as well as, you know... not wanted in England anymore. But yes, Australia was all about the convicts... I guess that's why we're such a slackish nation.

Sucks for them. XD Too many people tried to claim America...and now we have a national holiday for a dude who landed in the Caribbean and asked around for some tasty spices. o.0
But...you had Steve Irwin. Which makes up for...everything. XD I loved him so much. ;-;

Yeah, I think it was good the British were the only ones here. We've never had a civil war and the only thing we ever had that came close was a brief uprising at one of the mining towns and the Brits were being real prats xD Its called the Eureka Stockade.
I didn't, though I respected the work he did for conservation. He didn't just whine a lot, he actually bought up land for the sake of wildlife sanctuaries and the like. I found his on-screen manner to be offputting but he seemed like a nice guy when he was just being him and I find his daughter even more repugnant. For a long time after his death we were bombarded with that annoying little creature xD

We had wars with the British, wars with ourselves, mini wars with Mexico, wars we shouldn't have bothered with because they were halfway across the world and none of our beeswax, wars fighting for another countries freedom and protecting ourselves from bombs they didn't have....blah blah blah. ^^
I think...I actually had a nightmare about that child once. XD

Yeah I know all about your happy fun domestic warring xD Well, I don't know in detail but I know 'of' them. Enough to laugh and shake my head and be thankful WA was too lazy to try to seperate from the rest of Australia. (We got peeved at them taking all the minin revenue but never feeding any of the gained money into building up WA so there was serious talk of that thing you do when you want to, you know... not be apart of the larger nation o.o *too tired to think f the word*)
She's eerie, isn't she?

Secession! The US is quite the aggressive nation. I was just reading that the southern temperament might be blamed on the nationality of the immigrants (northern england/ireland/someplace where there was a big shepherding and honor culture - you didn't take crap from people, you killed them and made a feud out of it). I have never heard of this daughter. I suppose I ought to be glad. XD

I think her name is Baily? Or Benji? Something that starts with a B and sounds pretty. Scary little child though.
