Personally, I like to take my notes for Literature required reading on a separate sheet of paper, so if I end up liking the book, I can save it and read it later in my life and enjoy it without being harassed by my academic work. I also just do it because I like the pristine look of the pages. However, my Lit teacher this year requires that we take annotations in the books. And we receive credit for doing so, so it affects our grade if we don't. Maybe I wouldn't mind if they were ratty books with sandpaper like pages that were stiff and salty. But, no. They're nice, brand new paperback prints, with smooth covers, and soft pages that turn like a dream. And I have to destroy them with my ink and large, obnoxious writing. I literally keep opening the book, shuddering, and then putting it back on the desk. It is so tragic for me, I just want to rip my hair out in frustration. She's not just requiring a few notes here and there either, she wants us to literally cover the pages in thoughts. Am I crazy for thinking this is cruel?

Oh, I completely sympathize. xD Well, except we never get 'new' books. >> But I go through mine and erase all the marks people make in them. It's probably because I've had it drilled into me that 'Textbooks are holy' and to write in a textbook is sacrilege of the worst sort.
Do you get to keep your books, though?

That is a horrendous waste of a book and it would just do my head in if that was required of me. To me there are few things as beautiful as a pristine book and I keep mine in the very best condition I can for as long as I can, and am often unable to even read a book that has been mistreated.

I would refuse. ):
I never write in books, even my textbooks that I own. Would post-it notes be a possibility?

I'm borrowing Monkey's idea of postie notes. When we annotated last year that's what I did.
Though, like Mel, our 'new' or 'in good condition' books are generally from the late 90's or very early 2000. Or like my chemistry textbook from the early 80's, it's been rebound so many times, that there are no more margins to even consider writing in...

Yeah, this isn't my textbook. We don't have a textbook for Lit this year, so all my required readings are actual published works, (novels, poems, plays) that my family paid for, new in paperback, from a bookstore; so yes, they are mine for as long as I choose. I'm going to propose the post-it idea to her, because I'm really very unhappy about it.

Considering how much they do expect you to pay for those kinds of books, I should hope your teacher is at least reasonable enough to let you compromise wit post-its. (Great idea Moo, I never would have thought of that xD)

I don't write in proper novels or good books, but my text books (mostly Anthologies) are mega heavy and just massive, and on one day I need to take three of them in, so I just rip the pages out that I need. I see no need to exert extra pressure upon myself, even if it with back-breaking books I could NEVER write in my Charles Dickens or Oscar Wilde books, though! I'd die. I like them pretty. Post-its are good, I use mini ones in my dictionary I have a whole section post-ited on the 'ob' words, XD

... Hi, everyone. So, the day after I last posted, my book disappeared into the bottom of my backpack and got trampled by all my other books. So now the beautiful, smooth cover has a big ugly crease on it, its general shape is oriented in different directions, and I have defeated the purpose of my original frustration. xD.............. :C

..wait, why did you buy new? I get all my required AP books from ebay or half.com. I got a hardcover for less than $5, and it's probably been used twice a the most.
