I'm tired of these debates, facebook surveys when I have no idea what they're talking about, and other examples I can't think of. Quiz time, what do you call these things? I've bolded my choices... Sorry if the images are massive, I technically don't have time to be posting this. XD Lollipop or sucker or something else? Water fountain or bubbler or something else? Highway or turnpike (known as 'the pike' in Massachusetts) or something else? Soda or pop or coke or something else? *Most interesting graph ever: tastyresearch.files.wordpress.com/2006/10/popvssodamap.pngThat's about all I have to say for now. XD

Lollypop
Image didn't load It loaded! I call it a bridge road thingie.
Drinking Fountain
Soft drink, fizzy drink and, more recently (and to my chagrin) soda, but that's totally due to all of your influences. Shame.

Suckers... or at least growing up, round ones were suckers and flat ones were lollipops. Now, lollipop has started to take over.
Water fountain/Drinking fountain
Highway (or Freeway when I know that's what it's called, like the Southfield Freeway)
Grew up with pop, soda is becoming increasingly common in my vocabulary.

Lollipop, never called it anything else.
Water fountain.
Highway. A highway, a freeway, and a turnpike are three different things.
I call pretty much everything coke.

Um... o.o I'm pretty sure I use both terms depending on how obnoxious I want to be.
Water fountain. xDD at the term bubbler.
Freeway - what is pictured in Lauren's photograph. Highway - major, multi-lane roads. At least, that's how it's formally referred to by our driver's handbooks. We informally refer to them as roads or streets.
Oh, and soda. I think the 30 - 50% referred to in your fascinating graph is just all the adults who grew up in other states (and or countries) and moved here later in life. If it were taken solely by youth raised in Southern California, it would be roughly 95%.

Oh hey, I missed that map. I'm in one of the most solidly pop part of the country. xD

=o That graph is awesome! Do they have similar charts for other terms?
I say soda and pop alternately. I think soda sounds better. Or, a lot of times I just say the name of the drink?
Water fountain.
Highway. Uhm. Yeah, I always thought highways and freeways were the same, and I have no clue what a turnpike is. xD
Oh yes, and I use both lollipop and sucker.

Lollipop. Water fountain. Motorway or... that might be a spaghetti junction but I'm not sure (can't drive). Uhm... Fizzy pop. But generally we just call it by it's brand name. But yeh, fizzy pop.

Really, no else else calls it a bubbler? Or a bubblah, but that's a whole different issue. XD
I know that highways, freeways, parkways, and whatever else are different...I always just say take the pike somewhere. XD
