Most of you probably don't remember, but last summer (or maybe the one before) I had a few incidences with canned soft drink in the freezer. During which I discovered that Diet Coke doesn't split and fissure down the side, but instead the cap pops off completely, leaving two complete (and awesome) pieces. While I was learning this, my mum was learning how much she hated trying to clean frozen fizzy explosions.
Recently she re-organised the freezer and cleaned it out completely, and there was sticky diet coke residue in there. She warned me not to put any in there again, because she didn't want to clean up that mess again.
It's been pretty hot lately and in my usual fashion, I've been putting things in the freezer to cool off. Ice packs and wet flannels have been my main thing, but yesterday after finishing a Lemon Lime Bitters I got an idea. Those bottles sure retained their cold well. If I filled it with water and put it in the freezer for a bit, it would be even better then an ice pack; less chunky too.
I know, I know. In the back of my head I had some half-formed memory of putting glass in the freezer as being bad, but it was only going to be for a half hour, tops.
Last night my mum and I heard a bang. We weren't sure whether it was inside or out and quickly dismissed it as being something the cats were doing.
I opened the freezer this morning to find the glass bottle had exploded. I'd forgotten about it and now its top end was in the other side of the freezer.
I told my mum. Her first question was what was in the bottle, she was relieved it was just water. Of course now there is broken glass in the freezer xD
Improvement? I'll let you decide.
