That doesn't make them explode, that makes the microwave conduct lightening. It's actually very pretty.
The heat does, eventually, make most things explode. Usually things that are contained in a skin/shell of some kind or otherwise full of say, gravy. Peas, saussages, rice, left over stew; if you leave them a little too long they start to bubble and eventually pop. Things in gravy usually explode the lid off of the container they're in.
Internet flash animations have taught me that hamsters also explode.

You can warm them in the oven then. It doesn't need to be closed to work.
