Could we have sort of a "share thread" where we share music we like and think others will like? I'm always on the lookout for new music.
I will start it off, if you all don't mind. This really should be about more obscure stuff that people have less of a chance of knowing, but I will probably wind up throwing in some well-known stuff as well. I apologize if I wind up writing a textwall.
THE BEATLES (Ahem ahem Monkey) - The greatest band of all time, there is nothing more to say than that
Jazz/Blues
Jaga Jazzist - Jazz/House. Like Charles Mingus, if he lived in the future.
Bobby McFerrin - Bobby McFerrin is more of an experience than just plain music, and is best experienced live. Viewing him live is not just a concert, but an interactive affair involving the audience just as much as it involves McFerrin himself. The true magic is at his live performances, but the next best thing is watching videos of his concerts or listening to his live album, The Voice, or the album VOCAbuLarieS, involving artists from around the world.
Koop - Acid jazz/trip-hop on Waltz For Koop, and modernized big band on Koop Island Blues
The Apples - Funky Israeli acid jazz. Lots of fun for dancing to.
Mouse on the Keys - Japanese jazz with post rock style drumming.
Galactic - New Orleans funk
The Meters - More New Orleans funk
Skip James - Blues
Stan Getz/João Gilberto - God-tier bossanova
Rap/Hip Hop
Gil Scott-Heron - Poet behind the monumental "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," and sort of the grandfather of rap, before rap was about pimpin dem hoes. Although well-known for the powerful, politically charged album Pieces of a Man of 1971, his latest album I'm New Here, which is mainly about his childhood and his family is also very good.
The Roots - Socially conscious raps over jazz.
Edan - Insane, loopy, psychedelic rap evoking the Golden Age, but with a new spin. Lyrics that seem merely humorous at first, but actually include some pretty awesome metaphors and word play.
DJ Shadow - Ethereal, monumental, 100% samples trip-hop
Cut Chemist
Balkan Beat Box - Klezmer mixed with middle-eastern music mixed with hip hop mixed with electronica. Fantastic dancing music.
Brother Ali
Mos Def
Common
KRS-One
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
The Beastie Boys
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five
K'naan (because Monkey will murder me if I don't put him here)
R&B/Soul
Guy - One of the first to popularize new jack swing
Syreeta - Like a cross between Diana Ross and Beyonce. Her album with Stevie Wonder in particular is very good.
Ledisi - I actually have seen her live before! Although probably nothing can compare to the pure energy of her live shows, Turn Me Loose, her latest album, is as close as you're going to get, and it's still awesome.
Parliament - George Clinton. Enough said. (Also seen him. Insane.)
Of course, anything from Motown in the 60's and 70's.
Folk/bluegrass
Andrew Jackson Jihad - Kurt Vonnegut-inspired folk punk, or "cowpunk" as I have seen some people describe them. "Sad songs sung happily" as described by Sean Bonnette, the singing half of AJJ. Phenomenal lyrics combining sorrow and cynicism with humor and pure glee.
Neutral Milk Hotel - Fuzz folk. Don't think I really need to say much about them.
Bob Dylan - I know you all know who Bob Dylan is (You better) but I am putting him here anyway.
Carolina Chocolate Drops - Old-school bluegrass
Rock
El Ten Eleven - Instrumental prok rock
Maps and Atlases - Math rock
Paul McCartney and Youth - Electronica/blues rock. Anything is better than Wings.
Titus Andronicus - Really great punk/Americana fusion. You hear Bruce Springsteen in them even before the line "Baby, we were born to die," from the first track off The Moniter, their latest, civil war-inspired, album.
Sleater-Kinney - Feminist punk, part of the riot grrrl movement
Sonic Youth, Pixies, Modest Mouse, lots of classic rock, etc etc
Tremendously flamboyant, over the top, vibrant, bubblegum pop/glam rock
Mika
Goldfrapp
Scissor Sisters
Lady Gaga
Queen, Bowie, etc.
Electronica
International Pony - Zany, really out-there, German electro-pop
Goldfrapp
Cut Chemist
DJ Shadow
Jaga Jazzist
Koop
Daft Punk
DJ Soul Sister
Saltillo - God-tier trip hop
Squarepusher
