Happy birthday to me!Okay, okay, so it's my birthday (yaaaayyy!), but I'm on a diet (booooo!), so instead of my original cake plan (which was a vegan ice cream cake version of an Almond Joy), I made something slightly healthier. So this is a single layer cake, with 1/3 less oil than normal and instead of a delicious but fat-packed buttercream, I covered it with fresh strawberries and a chocolate ganache. Everyone thought it was great and it's totally gone now.

I woke up a little sick so the picture of fresh, somewhat acidic strawberries on a richer cake base made me reel x'D (I don't much like fresh fruit on/in baked things, come to think of it. Only dried.) But that's really beside the point. Aesthetically it's a really beautiful cake Well done maintaining your diet! It does sound like a really beautiful combination, and maybe next year you can have your almond joy ice cream cake, just in mini form.

Well, everybody else loved it (I reserved a small part of the cake for my brother by trying to keep most strawberries off it) and I didn't have to worry about pleasing you. I don't know if two pieces of cake really counts as maintaining my diet, but it was much better than any other cake I've made. By next year, however, I hope to have lost all the weight I want to and completed a six month maintenance period, so I should be able to afford a more lavish cake.

Well, you tried harder then I normally would xDD You'll have to explain what a maintenance period is later. Still, if it results in a ~lavish~ cake (though I think a lot of people would call this year's pretty lavish) it's a good thing

Well, after people lose all the weight they want, they often go off diet and gain most of it back. To stay at the weight you want, from what I've been reading, it's good to continue to watch what you eat and exercise. During the maintenance period, you're not dieting to lose weight, just to prevent gaining. You allow your body to readjust to a new lower weight and cement better life habits, making it less likely you'll regain. Or something.

Ah, okay. I mean I knew that dieting + reversion is counter productive but I wasn't quite sure if there was more to a maintenance period then that.

Nah, it's pretty common sensical.
I read one article that was all, "the best indicator of whether someone would keep off the weight was how long someone maintained their weight," and I was all, "... yeah."

If I liked chocolate cake, I would say that looked like absolute heaven. It's quite beautiful to look at, and I love fresh strawberries... anywhere. (:

My aunt doesn't like chocolate desserts much either. All cake is pretty much the same to me. It's just not pie.

No, I really don't. It gets in the way of my fun at many birthday and general celebrations. I like brownies, but chocolate cake is different... ):

How very, very unusual o.0 And sad... not sad on your part, just sad that it can get in the way of partay gorging. I only just found out that my poor aunt can no longer eat wheat stuff! We were having a birthday for my great grandfather (90 years old!) and we had this small chocolate (xD) cake. My aunt was all 'I can't have any. People always forget about me ' and continued on to explain why. I shall endeavour to ensure she now always has gluten free numminess.

Bit late, but that cake looks rather delicious! I'm not a huge chocolate cake fan, but if it's moist with a hint of sweetness I'm in. Just no ridiculous frosting levels. I don't have a good picture of my most recent baking exploits, but I made a cheesecake embedded with brownies (omg the brownies are so moist and delicious when stuck inside cake) and chocolate cupcakes with a dollop of cream cheese filling in the middle. Those cupcakes were amazingly moist and stayed moist for almost a week when packed in airtight containers! Also, what kind of diet are you doing, Monkey? I keep hearing about the Paleo diet (life before grain farming took over--basically veggies, fruits, meat, and no grains/carbs outside of the fruits) and I'm thinking about giving it a shot.

The cake was great, very sweet and moist.
It's just a normal, no gimmick, low calorie, low fat diet. It's working perfectly fine, except that after school got back in, the exercise part kind of dropped off. The bike hooked up to the stationary system it falling apart and now makes using it next to impossible.
I remember a guy talking about the Paleo diet (or something similar at least) on the Colbert Report a long time ago, and (aside from him being a jerk to vegans) I noted that I couldn't do it because my major source of protein is legumes, making me entirely ineligible. xD
Unfortunately, because of the diet, the only baking I've done in ages was cookies at Independence Day. They were oatmeal cookies with fresh strawberries and dried blueberries, but I completely forgot to take a photograph.
